Until the late 1980s, Whitefield was a small village which was a retirement colony for Anglo-Indians. It has since become a major hub for the Indian technology industry. The Export Promotion Industrial Park (EPIP) at Whitefield of one of the country's first information technology parks - International Tech Park, Bangalore (ITPB) which houses offices of many IT and ITES companies. The EPIP zone also has offices of other IT and R&D giants like TCS, Accenture, Symbian (Symbian India Ltd.), GE (John F. Welch Technology Center), Wipro, GE Medical Systems, iGate Global Solutions, Sapient, Manhattan Associates, SAP Labs, Perot Systems, Dell, IBM, Intel, etc.
In the vicinity of Whitefield Cosmos Mall has opened recently (near to Brookefields) and another couple of Malls are under construction and should open soon. A new Taj Group Hotel and few budget hotels like Ginger, Radha Hometel and Fortune are already operational. Zuri is another new hotel in the locality. Radisson and Chalukya group 5 stars are ready for launch in few months. Fine dine restaurants like Civet, @Rotika, Herbs & Spices, Maple, Mark Boulevard, are in the vicinity. You also find more restaurants like Nandhini, Bhagini, etc There are couple of Coffee shops (Coffee day) in the neighborhood.
